Three octavo vols. (16)pp each. Together the three volumes encourage the colorist to follow the color arrangements provided on the facing page; these images are humorous but altogether provocative, narrating in alternately snide and sincere overtures the efforts of the Resistance operating in Vichy France. Those efforts include printing ration cards, vandalizing walls, capturing German and Vichy troops, and using an effigy of Hitler for target practice. The Free French flag pops up throughout and with increasing regularity and visibility as the scenes progress, culminating in a celebration of victory and the conclusion of the war. Chenechot (1912-2001) was a violinist and cartoonist. Before the war he had used the pseudonym "Mac," and immediately afterward "Chen" - this set uses the latter. Bound in illustrated wrappers. Minimal rubbing and some foxing, small staining to second and third volumes, else near fine. Only one copy in institutional holdings.
