206 pp. First edition. One of the most famous of all miniature books, printed by the Salmin brothers of Padua from the "Fly's Eye" type cut by Antonio Farina in 1834. For many years this volume was the smallest ever printed from movable type. The Newsletter of the LXIVmos, No. 5, commented about the book, "Rarely may it be expected that bibliographical rarity and intense human interest will be combined in one book, yet in the precious little Galileo a Cristina di Lorena is this eminently the case. In this letter to his friend and patron, the great scientist puts forth one of the earliest and most eloquent pleas for the harmony of religion and science." This copy bound in original full gilt decorated vellum, and housed in a slipcase. A fine copy of this cornerstone of miniature book collecting. A.e.g. (Bromer and Edison, p. 114-117; Bondy pp., 95-96; Spielmann 161; American Art Association Sale 112; Mikrobiblion 103; Welsh 2935). (3/4 by 1/2; 18x12mm.).
