Original watercolor study, with wood engraving proof and print. The image ultimately appeared in Wolf's Welt/XII Tafeln, published in 1929. The present print's size is slightly off from that recorded by von Borries, suggesting that it was a separate production from that included in the 1929 suite. The set here indicates Wolf's process, particularly his skill with darkness and light and with various substrates; the proof has been printed on rag textile, highly textured and thus a difficult surface on which to achieve a bold print. Trace edgewear to all three, else a fine view into Wolf's capabilities in different media. (Watercolor measures 15 by 20 3/4 in.; proof measures 17 3/8 by 22 7/8 in.; print measures 18 1/8 by 22 1/2 in).
