Octavo. 20 pp. Contains a leaf from a copy of the first Bible printed in America, translated into the language of the Native Americans by John Eliot and printed at Cambridge in New England in 1663. The text by George Parker Winship gives an account the undertakings by the translator and the printers. The leaf, mounted on a stub, is from Exodus 29:21 - 30:23, which concerns the consecration of Aaron and his sons as priests, as well as the establishment of the altar of incense. In deep maroon cloth-back boards, covers gilt-stamped with fleuron and lozenge motifs, title gilt-stamped on spine. Extremely light rubbing to corners and spine ends. Leaf shows light, uniform marginal soiling, Bookplates. Near fine overall. (Chalmers 45).
