Folio. xxviii pp., (6)ff., 76pp. Everson began the task of printing the new, authorized translation of the Psalms in 1951 in the hope of completing it by 1957, the 500th anniversary of the edition of Fust and Schoeffer. By 1954 he had completed only 72 pages and decided to abandon the project in order to devote himself to the priesthood. The high quality of the printing which he had produced inspired Estelle Doheny and others to complete and publish the present volume. The preliminary sheets were printed at the Plantin Press and Doheny supervised the elegant binding. With a Foreword by Robert O. Schad and a note on the Psalter by Brother Antoninus. In the Foreword, Schad writes that "From the first, Countess Doheney had been one of the chief supporters of Brother Antoninus and his Psalter. In this book, coming from her beloved California, she saw an extraordinary manifestation of spirituality in printing." Although not stated, this is Schad's copy, and includes a typescript of his Zamorano Club address on May 6, 1950. Faint sunning to spine, else a fine association copy bound in full blue gilt-stamped morocco by the Lakeside Press. Housed in the original slipcase. Doheney's morocco bookplate to front paste-down. This is a very beautiful book, which many consider to be the greatest piece of American fine printing in the second half of this century.
