Consisting of four leaves of varying sizes mounted to a single sheet measuring 12 1/2 by 9 1/2 inches, together with Evan Gill's payment draft to his brother for the design, and an invoice for the printing on St. Dominic's Press stationery, also mounted to a larger sheet. Beginning with a rough preliminary pencil sketch, this archive charts the evolution of Gill's design for his brother's bookplate. The group includes a pen-and-ink drawing touched with Chinese white on which Gill has written out the significance of each element within the design, as well as a note about repositioning the rose that appears to the right of the mill down slightly. Gill also drew an alternative leaf design in ink and white in the far-right margin, initialing and dating the drawing. A printed example of the bookplate rounds out the process pieces. A payment draft for two Guineas from Evan in ink, which Gill has signed in full across four halfpenny revenue stamps, and a printed receipt from St. Dominic's Press for one Guinea complete the picture of the whole project. Overall, a fine overview of Gill's process. (Physick 171).
