Oblong octavo. (109)ff. A dazzling album of pressed, preserved, and fully catalogued butterfly wings, assembled by a keen lepidopterist. The album begins with pasted-in photographs with identifiers and captions to explain the requisite equipment, then proceeds to tables of contents and an overview of the life stages and anatomical structures of the butterfly, complete with hand-drawn illustrations. The album itself shows 95 wing specimens, some pages with double specimens to show the upper- and undersides. Each specimen is carefully placed within gridlines, and its body reproduced by hand in watercolor and ink. Each is identified according to its common name, its Latin (Linnean) name, size, and where and when it was caught. All were gathered over an incredibly short and intense period, between May and September 1914. It is possible that Japan's entry into WWI on August 23, 1914, disrupted this eager lepidopterist's collecting; just as likely, because he has here used the entirety of the page count, he simply began a new album. All specimen pages with protective sheets. Bound in blue cloth over boards with gilt titling, somewhat rubbed, at spine. Some overall rubbing and soiling, but interior remains brilliant. Near fine. A personal, knowledgeable natural history.
