Small quarto. 33pp, frenchfold. Six wood engravings by Ward add illustrative gravitas to Voltaire's poetic contemplation of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, a natural disaster that decimated the city and killed approximately 30,000 of its citizens. Translated by Anthony Hecht and presented in facing English and the original French. Dan Burne-Jones was Ward's bibliographer, though he never completed the task for publication. Bound at the Harcourt Bindery in quarter black cloth with starry pattered paper over boards. Brush of bumps to few corners, else fine in slipcase.
