Hand-colored sheet printed from copperplate measuring 22 3/8 by 17 3/4 inches folded into twelve sections. Game board features a spiral track with thirty-three numbered circular vignettes by George Cruikshank, with decorative calligraphic titling. Together with the eight-page instruction booklet which provides the publication date. First published by Darton in 1810, the game borrows its structure from the Game of the Goose, which it employs in teaching children the value of moral behavior: Virtues—Prudence, Honesty, Temperance, etc.—are rewarded from a bank, while Vices are punished by missing turns and being sent back to the start. Thomas Newton also collaborated with Darton on The Mansion of Bliss, the basic structure and publication history of which mirror that of the present game. With an advertising label affixed to the linen backing that is not mentioned in Shefrin. Linen backing shows some minor scattered foxing and a couple of light stains, otherwise about fine. Booklet kettle stitching slightly loose, and buff wrappers are split at spine foot. Mottled paper slipcase with pink title label rubbed along edges, but structurally sound. Lacking teetotum and markers, as usual. Nearly fine overall. (Shefrin H2243[ii]).
