Five-panel carousel book; the book unfurls concertina-style, then can be turned into a complete circle, held in place by magnets in the covers and free-standing. Each panel consists of four layers: frontmost is green with a banner containing a single line of what is ultimately a five-line poem by Chen; then a blue and red paper cage; then a view of the globe; and as background is text from the preamble to the Charter of the United Nations, written in 1945. Chen's poem, and especially her material obfuscation (or veiling) of her multi-faceted world, makes bold and artistically inspired statement about the ways in which the "conscious decision to shield our eyes / hiding behind words" alienates those we don't know or can't readily see, and in doing so cheapens the original aims of the UN. Bound in silk covered boards; upper cover with inlay of green paper "cage" motif. Held in folding box. Fine.
