Portfolio containing twelve hand-colored woodcut prints. Early in his career, Hermann-Paul established himself as a staunch leftist - his pointed social criticisms found their way into various periodicals; however, after the outbreak of hostilities in 1914, the former Dreyfusard channeled his artistic focus toward more mainstream expressions of patriotism. He produced two Calendriers de la Guerre between 1916 and 1917, both of which offer heroic depictions of various generals—largely French, but also Russian and English—one for each month of the year. These were rendered in woodcuts, a medium to which Hermann-Paul switched out of necessity, the materials needed for lithography becoming scarce during wartime. Hermann-Paul's cuts possess an expressionistic sensibility, and the backgrounds chosen reflects elements of each general's campaign. Printed on acidic paper, which is browned at edges with a few small chips, else fine. Printed and colored heavy paper portfolio has a three-inch tear along lower spine, and toning to extremities.
