Small octavo. (72)pp. Printed in Subiaco type by Charles St. John Hornby on Japan vellum. Opening initial executed in gold leaf by Graily Hewitt, with the initial letters for each ode hand-lettered in red and blue. This is the first of two Horatian Odes Hornby produced in 1903; and though the two books are identical in format, they were not issued concurrently. Franklin, speculating on Hornby's motive to issue a Latin text in a fine press edition, notes that "Hornby may have viewed this, as (Edward) Prince did, as among the purest works of his press artistically" (p. 70).  In full limp vellum with gilt-stamped spine. Some cockling to lower cover and pastedown, else fine.  (Hornby XV).
