Quarto. 89pp. An explicit effort in environmentalism, Newhall's narration weaves together Adams's Western vistas - no doubt the star of the collection - with images by other American photographers, from Edward Weston's sympathetic visions of nature, to Jacob Riis' portraits of industrial New York, to Margaret Bourke-White's searing observations of the Dust Bowl. The result is a distinctly American landscape, with sections evocatively titled "Brief Tenant," "New World," "Machine and a New Ethic," "Mathematics of Survival," "Dynamics," and "Crucial Resource." Bound in green cloth over boards showing light rubs to corners, else near fine in very good dust wrapper.
