Quarto. 40, (21)pp. This book, the De Proprietatibus Rerum, was printed by Wynkyn de Worde in 1495. Written in the thirteenth century by Bartholomaeus Anglicus, it was one of the most popular medieval encyclopedias. The volume bears particular weight on the history of printing and papermaking; it was the first English book to use paper made by England's first papermaker, John Tate, and also was the first published English translation of Bartholomaeus's work. The leaf book itself, printed by Henry Morris at Bird and Bull, contains essays by Howell Heaney (on Wynkyn de Worde's edition), Lotte Hellinga (on Wynkyn de Worde's woodcut illustrations), and Richard Hills (on John Tate and his paper mill), as well as facsimiles of de Worde's nineteen woodcuts. Contains an original note to the standing order list, written by Henry Morris, which states: "...I am convinced this is likely to be the most important book I can ever hope to publish in the field of papermaking history. I also know how unlikely it is that another such incomplete copy of Bartholomaeus will appear on the market again....this was a book I could not resist."
