Octavo. 292 + (4)pp undated advertisements. The first American of Stevenson's sweeping, seafaring tale is also the first illustrated edition, featuring four plates by F. T. Merrill, including a frontispiece map. With the requisite point of "rain" for "vain" on the last line of page 40. Bound in full brown cloth over boards with titling and illustrations stamped in black. Frontispiece tender but attached and all other hinges sturdy and square. Rubs to extremities and wear to spine ends. Else a vg+ to near fine copy, among the most attractive to turn up. Bookplate to front pastedown. (Beinecke 244, though only reports yellow and gray cloth covers)
