Two octavo vols. xi, 275; 329pp. Cooper's third novel and a prequel to his The Last of the Mohicans is set in pioneer New York, with similar themes of an overwhelming natural environment, indigeneity and displacement, and the self-fashioning of the American identity. E. B. Clayton, Printer named at the title page, as required for the first issue. This copy delightfully square. Bound in contemporary stained calf that has been rebacked. Foxed throughout, as usual for the edition, but inoffensively so overall. Very good. (BAL 3829)
