Tall quarto. (30)pp., frenchfold. Printed in blue and maroon, Thoreau's text is illustrated with Alpert's woodcuts, printed in complementary, gradient shades of blue, green, and red. The illustrations ably capture the tone of Thoreau's work, which he completed two years before his semi-hermetic residency by Walden Pond. Alpert has here integrated the corrections Thoreau made to the essay's initial publication in his personal copy of the October 1843 issue The Dial . Fine in linen boards, printed with a design similar to the illustrations inside.
