This brief essay by Gill from 1940 is printed here for the first time, along with reproductions of nine previously unpublished preliminary sketches for stamp designs, to which are added reproductions of stamps then published. In the end, notes Michael Russem in his afterword, Gill was not terribly successful at stamp design, with only two of the seven designs produced. An elegant examination of this little-explored facet of Eric Gill's work. Fine in blue striped pastepaper over boards.
