Two small quarto vols. 584; 647pp. President Grant's thorough reminiscences narrate his ascendance through the military ranks and his leadership of the Union Army during the Civil War. Volume II concludes with an appendix of further commentary by Grant, a fold-out map, an index, and errata for Volume I. Bound in the publisher's deluxe half-morocco with brown silk over boards, with gilt roundels to both covers showing a portrait of Grant at the upper and a symbolical motif of the Mississippi River at the lower. Rubs to corners and edges, slight soiling to covers, but internally clean and bright. Very good, given the period's standards of publishing. Gift inscription to front flyleaf of Volume I from a Mrs. Charles H. Grant, apparently of no relation we can find. All edges marbled.
