Two volumes: oblong octavo and oblong 48mo. (8); (24)ff. Interleaved among the larger volume's pages of Wilbur's poem are sheets of vellum containing hand-painted patterns printed as digital pigments, and into which have been cut shapes of starlings in flight. The companion volume, an apt "flutter book," selects words from the original poem and creates a simplified, mutable version. This transmission reflects, and even enacts, the poem's perspective of a parent watching a child grow up and transition from nuanced simplicity to complexity. The final image in the larger volume is a monotype, a larger version of which has been separately printed and laid in at the back of the edition's clamshell box. This monotype has with it a larger vellum overlay on which is printed the word "cargo." Larger volume bound in full blue cloth over boards. "Flutter book" laid into chemise. All held in clamshell box. Fine. Prospectus laid in.
