(25)pp., which fold out to a panorama. No limitation indicated. This intricately illuminated alphabet shows the development of the decorated letter from the late fourth to the sixteenth century. Printed in bright colors, the letters show interweaving vines, animals, and amusing caricatures. The text, explaining the origins of each letter, is tucked in to a pocket in the front cover. This copy bears some additional pencil inscriptions from van Stone to a noted miniature calligraphy collector at the letters "G" and "T".  Bound oriental-style in stiff wrappers with a ribbon tie. Very fine. (2 5/8 by 2 1/2; 67x62mm.).
