Octavo. (8)pp. Frontispiece photographic portrait of Lincoln Steffens, a leftist journalist to whom the book is dedicated. This is Reed second book, appearing before his national notoriety as a labor organizer and communist and yet here an early intimation of his political leanings. The heroic Sangar amounts to a conscientious objector, intervening in a battle in the name of international peace and being called a traitor for his noble efforts. Hillacre adopted the aesthetic and literary mien of Arts & Crafts, and made that movement's socialist leaning more obvious, suited to a rapidly industrializing America. Bound in gray paper over boards with gilt titling. Minimal rubbing, else near fine in slipcase.
