Quarto. 83pp. A variety of ancient writings, from the epic of Gilgamesh to the law-code of Hammurabi to business documents are here translated from Akkadian to English. The color illustrations, which are contemporary renderings of ancient Mesopotamian art, are by Harold Kimmelman. Faint sunning to spine, else near fine in quarter blue niger goatskin with five raised bands (the only Bird & Bull book bound with laced-in cords) and tan cloth over boards. One of the 140 copies bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in London with the bindery stamp to rear pastedown. Prospectus and note from the Press about the binding laid in with two printed specimens of "early and late signs," which were originally intended to be pasted to the inside covers but were left off "for aesthetic reasons," according to the Bird & Bull Bibliography (A6).
