Square quarto. 41pp. This printing of the apocryphal Gospel of Mary evokes the divine geometries implied in the text, in which the exactitudes of devotional practice are proofs of ecstatic vision. The reader reaches this altitude at the centerfold, which bursts into a pop-up of blue, green, orange, and pink. The book's page design itself takes cues from the medieval manuscripts the translator, Karen King, consulted, with the primary text inset to thorough glosses by Rosemary Radford Ruether. Ruther has also contributed concluding essays on Mary Magdalene's relation to the New Testament, Gnostic literature, and the Church. The interspersed diagrams were drawn from Jay Hambidge's Dynamic Symmetry: The Greek Vase. With cover and centerfold piece pulp-painted by Van Vliet. In a woven binding with exposed spine. Fine. Housed in dropback box.
