32mo. 33pp. An anonymous letter written to a "nephew," describing the tensions which engendered the American Civil War and which continued to linger into the subsequent period of Reconstruction. Much of the author's concerns stem from the departure of Ulysses S. Grant and the inauguration of Rutherford B. Hayes - the subtext has much to do with the alleged Compromise of 1877, in which both Republicans and Democrats accused each other of cheating in the 1876 election, and the general public believed both to have colluded in exchange for mutually secured power. Sounds familiar...certainly to an audience later to receive Sinclair Lewis's It Can't Happen Here as much to an audience now receiving it happening here. Bound in gray printed wrappers. Spine fragile and splitting, else very good.
