Octavo. xxiv, 707pp. The first issuance of the first edition of Twain's compendium of comedy, though it was actually edited by William Dean Howells (apparently Twain was the more saleable name of the two). Includes pieces from Ambrose Bierce, Joel Chandler Harris, Bret Harte, and Harriet Beecher Stowe, and many others who tried their hand at ribaldry. As writ for the first issue, "Warm Hair" on page 8 is erroneously credited to Twain and the index of titles is organized in order of appearance. Bound in publisher's brown cloth over boards detailed in black and gilt. A square and bright copy, with edges mildly rubbed and slight bumps to corners. Stamp of the Publishers and Booksellers Protective Association to rear flyleaf. (BAL 3425)
