Boxed board and card game measuring 4 1/2 by 4 by 4 inches. The game—here stated as the third edition—consists of the following components: bifolium instruction sheet; folded hand-colored map of the world; folded paper game board, printed and hand-colored; and five variously colored paper sleeves, each bearing a roman numeral and the name of a part of the world, containing a small hand-colored map of the area, as well as a total of 32 hand-colored cards showing the peoples from each part of the world. Also enclosed is the book Description de differens peuples remarquables des cinq parties du monde, which provides complete descriptions for all the groups a player might encounter, and what appears to be an original die, which is pictured on the game board and factors into the instructions. The game is designed to be played in three different ways: as a game of commerce; as an instructional game; and as an entertainment involving "pleasant" rewards and penalties. Complete and extremely rare thus, despite its popularity in its own day; the game was first published in 1801, again in 1807, and here in 1811, now commanding an international market. Additionally, this is among the earliest geographical games of its kind to contain descriptions and images of the indigenous peoples of Australia, New Zealand, and the South Sea islands. Johann Georg Klinger (1764-1806) is considered one of the last great globe makers of Nuremberg. There are no records that Klinger put his imprimatur to any other type of geographical game apart from the one recorded example of a German version of this game. Both Klinger and his collaborator, Johann Wolfgang Müller, were based in Nuremberg, where the former established his globe- and map-making business and the latter set himself up as a publisher of the same, along with educational games and cards. Slight wear and soiling to original box, which has a colored title panel on the lid, the sides consisting of red textured paper with gilt decorations. The contents are fine and bright.
