His poetic and political thinking, and his willingness to encompass a diasporic experience in both, placed him at the center for the crisis between the two nations, becoming a driving force in the formation of the Cuban Revolutionary Party. After his death in 1895, his cultural image has gained currency as a martyr, apparent here with the candle included at the front cover. Hand-colored illustrations and paper collages throughout, some of which reproduce Martí's own handwriting. Bound in stiff card with photograph of Martí at upper cover set within intersecting branches and above a partial frame of flowers. Candle can be removed from front cover pocket, as intended.
