Octavo. 64pp. Rodríguez continues to reign as Cuba's most recognized folk singer, and many of his songs, as in the American folk tradition, carry progressive political messages. He has remained influential among the political left, emerging in the 1960s as a leader among the Nueva Trova movement. His work has been banned during the various authoritarian governments in Latin America, particularly those in the 70s and 80s. Presented here are both lyrics and diaristic entries in prose; particularly poignant is his meditation on his visit to Africa to play for Cuban troops there in support of the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola. Bound in stiff card covered in blue netting, recalling his 1969 stint on a fishing board, a period during which he wrote some of his most popular songs. Other elements include photographs, printed paper onlays and hand-colored illustrations. Light bumping, else near fine.
