In his Preface, he notes that the book is formatted as a folio, as the signatures are signed in 4s; also that it is sewn in 8s. His opting to present this work as a 64mo lends material evidence to the assertion that apprentice printers were often given the task of producing a miniature book as a training exercise. The reflections and sayings Abrahams selected as the basis for his text are taken from sources both familiar - such as La Fontaine - and obscure: he specifically cites Count Johan Gabriel Oxenstierna, the 18th century Swedish writer and diplomat, and the German playwright August von Kotzebue. The son of booksellers, Abrahams (1785-1874) would serve for three decades as the editor of the Middelburgsche Courant, and he continued the family's bookshop together with his brother, Jacob.
