Consisting of four leaves of varying sizes mounted to a single sheet measuring 12 1/2 by 9 1/2 inches, together with Evan Gill's payment draft to his brother for the design, and a printed invoice for the printing on St. Dominic's Press stationery, also mounted to a larger sheet. Beginning with a rough preliminary pencil sketch, this archive charts the evolution of Gill's design for his brother's bookplate. This group includes a pen-and-ink drawing touched with Chinese white on which Gill has written out the significance of each element within the design, as well as a note about repositioning the rose which appears to the right of the mill down slightly. Gill also worked an alternative leaf design in ink and white in the far right margin, and initialed and dated the drawing. A printed example of the bookplate rounds out the process pieces. A payment draft for two Guineas from Evan in ink, which Gill has signed in full across four halfpenny revenue stamps, and a printed receipt from St. Dominic's Press for one Guinea complete the picture of the whole project. Overall a fine overview of Gill's process. (Physick 171).
