Quarto, bound dos-a-dos. (12); (12)ff. Dao's fifteen poems have been translated into English by David Hinton with help from Yanbing Chen, and calligraphed in Chinese by Er Tai Gao. Paden has supplied the two tipped-in frontispieces, these numbered and signed in pencil. A material merging of languages, the book emblematizes Dao's contributions to both Asian and American poetry. An exile since the events at Tiananmen Square, Dao has maintained a hold on essential elements of Chinese culture, an implicitly political stance given the country's turn toward strict political dogmatism. Bound in full plain cloth over boards with paper labels to both covers. Fine. Prospectus laid in.
