Quarto. (40)pp. Illustrated and encrypted throughout by Ely in reds, blues, browns, and blacks. The whole is an experiment in the symbology of maps and atlases, and how we can understand a cartographic image, a geometric diagram, or a series of letterforms almost entirely by intuition and approximation. The relay between the two-dimensional picture and a three-dimensional reception is here presented as both cognitive and artistic. It is made especially tangible at the binding of full morocco over boards heavily layered in acrylic paints, into which Ely has etched an array of his ciphers and symbols. Leather at spine is painted over in a gradient of green, blue, and red, bleeding over onto the lower edge. A statuesque, archaeological example. Fine. Housed in quarter chemise and slipcase, both in yellow cloth. Evidence suggests Ely did not finish the edition.
