48mo. (iii-vi), vii-viii, 9-69, (2)pp. Woodcut frontispiece and additional seventeen half-page woodcut illustrations throughout. This, an unrecorded edition, is later than most and formatted more economically by having a truncated page count while still retaining the whole of the original text. The proliferation of editions recorded in WorldCat and in the ESTC indicates the popularity of the moral narrative; it certainly arrived on the scene at the fortunate moment when children's literature was taking off on both sides of the Atlantic. Dorothy Kilner, writing under her pseudonym "M. P.," certainly took advantage of the opportunity; six of her titles, including the present one, constitute the whole of the publisher's advertisement that appears at the rear paste-down. Bound in original Dutch gilt papers over boards showing relatively mild rubbing, else uncommonly fine.
