Oblong 12mo pamphlet. (12)pp. Chromolithographed cover illustrations; text figures printed in two colors. Essentially an extended advertisement for Mason's Extract of Herbs - a botanic-based herbal tonic that, when diluted, produced a non-alcoholic beer-like beverage. The narrative focuses on two brothers - Jack and Phil - who both obtain employment with the railroad upon the completion of school: Jack becoming a signalman, and Phil an "express guard." Both brothers pledged "from all strong drink to abstain;" however, Jack soon "fell into temptation" while his brother adhered to quaffing Mason's, which left him clear-headed enough to avert a disaster caused by Jack's alcohol-induced negligence. Apart from rust stains around the now-perished staple once serving as the binding fastener, this is a bright, clean copy in wrappers. No copies in commerce and no institutional holdings recorded.
