Octavo. xviii, 19-591pp. An early entrant in Twain's oeuvre and central to the establishment of his tramping, comical mythos, Roughing It received numerous, simultaneous printings, indicating that Twain's accelerating public appeal. Underneath the Hartford imprint are listed firms in Chicago, Toledo, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Boston, and San Francisco. With the primary state A point, with lines 20-21 on p. 242 reading "premises - said he / was occupying his." Most copies apparently bound in cloth but this in a variant advertised in the publisher's prospectus. In half morocco with burgundy cloth over boards with gilt rules and spine titling. General edgewear, motes of staining to cloth and leather, text block has sunk to meet the foot of the boards. Some gatherings jut from the general line but are firmly attached. Front hinge cracked. Overall a square and scarce example of the marriage between the popular literary market and the binding market. Previous owner's envelope laid in. (BAL 3337)
