48mo. 61pp + 3pp publisher's advertisements. This first separate edition of Stevenson's foray into gothic horror features three full-page illustrations. Often in a somewhat debilitated state, this copy is in vg+ condition with a delightfully clean interior, slight lean to boards, mild rubs to corners, and some toning to spine. Ownership signature of Vincent Starret at front flyleaf. Starret was a pulp detective fiction writer, after the fashion of Arthur Conan Doyle. He was most particularly and convincingly a Holmesian, publishing The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes in 1933 and founding The Hounds of the Baskerville, the Chicago chapter of The Baker Street Irregulars. A fitting association. (Beinecke 608)
