An original 14pp. manuscript by Sand, of approximately 1,500 words in blue ink. Sand here critiques Auguste Vacquerie's Les Miettes de l'Histoire, in which Vacquerie provides a history of Jersey, where he had been living in exile, through a series of narrative vignettes. Sand's review is only half-concerned with the literary or scholarly value of Vacquerie's work. The latter is, rather, a convenient vehicle for Sand's apprehension of the characteristics of Jersey's residents and of its relationship with a fraught, post-July Revolution France. With a specially printed title page. Concludes with Sand's autograph. The article was published in 1863 in "La Presse." Bound in full blue levant morocco with gilt borders and rules, gilt rolls to dentelles, spine in six compartments. An important archival intervention in the modern assessment of Sand's work, especially concerning her activity in larger literary circles and her interest in the mid-century French political atmosphere.
