Octavo. Thirteen pen- and wash-color drawings, each tipped in to a separate page. Beginning with the title page, on which "Titelbild" is inscribed within a frame, the artist composes a tableau onto each leaf, at the center of which are a group of children engaged in some activity. In each scene, around the children is an array of trompe l'oeil pages, behind them is a framed image, beneath them is a spread of domestic tools or objects, and at the corners are reptiles, insects, and flora. The pages depict elements of geography and history, from regional costumes to exotic animals, and the framed image is invariably of a famous monument, such as Trajan's Column, the Sphinx, and the Blue Mosque. Each tableau as a whole forms a sort of composite pictogram, placing the viewing child, who would identify themselves with the central group, in the midst of the world they currently live in, and alerting them to the various subjects of which they ought to have understanding in order to effectively participate in that world as adults. There is no clear rationale to the arrangements of the various tableaux, but there need not be one; the drawings together present the world as intrinsically diverse, rife with both obligation (domestic tools) and adventure (distant places and peoples). Album bound in grey blind-embossed paper over boards. Drawings quite clean other than some foxing at edges and one with small stain in negative space; covers lightly rubbed. Near fine.
