(20)ff, accordionfold. One side of the string shows a range of buildings then emblematic of America's capital, including Howard University (founded in 1867, only a few years prior to publication), the Post Office Department, the Agricultural Bureau, the Capitol Building, the White House (here called the Executive Manor), the infamous Ford's Theatre (in 1873, the Medical Museum), the Masonic Temple, the insane asylum, and the Smithsonian Institute. Reverses on pink paper provide descriptions. Quite the overview of a city in transition during Reconstruction, and hence possibly a bit of soft, tourist-oriented diplomacy toward America's own citizens. Held in circular container, with front panel stiffened and functioning as lid. Some overall rubbing, marginal chip to lower left of front panel, else very good. Only four copies listed in OCLC.
