Silver medallion case in two parts threaded to screw together (hence, schraubtaler), featuring a relief portrait of Frederick the Great on the upper half, based the lower half contains a allegorical relief showing Fame seated on Time beneath the motto "Veritatis Paradoxica," in addition to the date and Mörikofer's name below the figure. Within the case is a series of thirty-nine roundels, each with text and plates which fold out, accordion-style. The copper engraved plates by Bartholomäus Hübner include views, two maps, and a portrait. The contents concern Frederick the Great's Silesian campaigns, which began shortly after he ascended to the throne in 1740. This campaign marked the commencement of the War of Austrian Succession (1740-1742), which resulted in Frederick gaining much Silesian territory. These gains were solidified in the Second Silesian War (1744-1745) - a conflict that set the stage for the Seven Years' War (1756-1763) which notably drew in much of Western Europe. All these conflicts represented victories for Frederick; the resulting territorial expansion strengthened his reputation, and further consolidated his hold on power. Some panels detached; silver shows a touch of tarnish. Overall a near fine example of this miniature art form, known only in two institutional holdings (Brown; V&A). (Diameter: 2 inches; 50mm).
