Octavo. (21)ff. Each recto impressed as an etched plate, executed by Wall and printed by him in a range of colors. Lynch's text, with Wall's illustrations, is as much a tour of Irving's literary sketches as it is the Northeast Region he encountered, with particular attention landmarks like his Sunnyside cottage, the City Hotel on Broadway, and Sleepy Hollow. Irving's particular bearing on the mythology of upstate New York is borne out in Lynch's dedication, which she gives over to her mother, Alevia Van Pelt Lynch, "whose forbears figured in the famous annals of Diedrich Knickerbocker," Irving's fictional historian. Wall's own style and his use of etched plates made him a chief liaison in the translation of British Arts & Crafts book design, particularly of James Guthrie, to an American scene. Lynch's inscription reads, "A friend of Eleanor's, especially an old friend - with many common memories - is a friend of - Virginia Lynch." Bound in blue paper over boards backed in glazed teal cloth, with etched cover label. Mild rubs to corners, else near fine.
