Oblong octavo. (15)pp. SIx full-page color illustrations charmingly depict the turn of the seasons. Berl's style evokes the aesthetic vogue of the interwar period, when throughout Europe, generally, the bold and risky abstractions of pre-Great War modern art fell out of favor, replaced by neoclassicism and pastoralism. Here, garlanded children play in fruitful fields or work alongside their parents at harvest. A young Berl (1908-1994) created these illustrations while a student at painter Frank Cizek's art school for gifted children. This is the frist in the series, "Winer Jungendkunst-Bilderbücher." Bound in illustrated boards backed in green cloth. Foxing to both exterior and interior, rubbing to corners, light sunning to spine, else a very good copy especially rare in its dust wrapper, this likewise very good with loss along spine, general toning, and some chipping.
