First edition. Conrad's final completed novel, set in the south of France and a vast commentary on the shifting, and often conflicting, dynamics of the early 19th-century Mediterranean. The overarching narrative concentrates on the inescapability of violence, but woven in is a retelling of the myth of Acis and Galatea. Bound in quarter blue paper with pale paper over boards, with gilt title device to upper cover and single gilt rules along spine edge. Light overall soiling to covers, mild bumping to corners, else near fine in original glassine and blue paper wrapper, this also near fine. Housed in additional blue cloth jacket and custom slipcase.
