Quarto. 6ff, plus folder. Hoeksema's movable, portable cinema brings the wonder of film into the hands of children via six two-sided paper discs. By cutting the disc away from its square sheet - the corners of which bear the instructions - pricking it, slotting it into the folder, and securing the centers with a tack, the viewer can rotate through narrative scenes. Sequences proceed through a viewing area cut out of either side of the folder, which is illustrated at both sides to show a lively movie-watching audience, either of animals or humans. Hoeksema has, essentially, adapted his innovative comic-strip format to the movement of a phonograph and the visual effect of film. The result could be classified as a sort of early paper experiment in animation, was only just beginning to take off (Disney had just dawned and Betty Boop was not yet born). One disc is an ABC, and according to the laid-in "program," is the first to be played, probably to introduce the new reader to the concept. The rest show various adventures of brave and/or comical characters; one, which takes place in Africa, uses racist stereotypes to depict Black people. Sheets all fine and unpunctured, illustrated folder pricked at center and with some rubbing along spine. A near fine kit, quite rare and hardly, if ever, used. With original illustrated envelope, rather chipped and with some loss, but otherwise structurally sound. Only two copies in OCLC.
