Square 12mo, (8)ff. Illustrated with eight large hand-colored engravings printed on rectos only, below which is printed an eight-line verse. The subjects treated here include a blue jay, a zebra, a cow, a horse, a girl, an angler, a red deer, and a turkey. The apparently prolific publisher, Lucius Stebbins, tended to align himself with progressive causes, which may have led to the 1864 publication of a steel engraving depicting a Union soldier reading the Emancipation Proclamation to an enslaved family. Light brown printed wrappers show faint uniform soiling and a couple of brief tears to spine ends. Corners a trifle dog-eared. Overall a very good copy of an uncommon chapbook, known only in four institutional copies.
