32mo. 32pp. Illustrated with a frontispiece and five engraved plates, all of which are hand-colored. The text of this moral tale in verse was adapted from the original French story written by Madame de Beaumont. Catherine Ann Dorset chose to write anonymously, even though she came from a family of well-known writers. Although, like the 1811 Johnson & Warner edition, the title page notes that this is the "First American from the second London edition," this is quite clearly a resetting of the text with different plates, which, according to the front cover were available uncolored or colored, as here. The Morgan & Yeager edition is also considerably rarer than its earlier counterpart, with only two copies recorded. Wrappers show slight rubbing and chipping to spine, and a faint ink stain to upper cover; lightly foxed throughout. Very good.
