An early foray into his political writing, the coy treatise is nevertheless prescient of the Great War a couple decades later and speaks, quite intentionally, to the inherent frivolousness of war. Pepper has here compiled Twain's various manuscripts into one coherent essay. Frontispiece portrait of Twain is a reproduction of a drawing by T. W.
