Octavo. xiv, 461 + 2pp advertisements. Photographic plates inserted throughout, including as frontispiece. As Blanck wryly puts it, "It seems almost needless to comment that the work is original and that both Sieur Louis de Conte and Jean Francois Alden," the authors cited at the title page, "as pseudonyms for Samuel L. Clemens." As first state point requires, the fourth entry in the rear advertisements is for Memoirs of Barras. Bound in full red cloth over boards with silver and gilt shield, sword, and "Mark Twain" to front cover. A fine, bright copy, startlingly preserved with only miniscule rubs to outer corners and minimal soiling to extremities of text block. Housed in custom chemise and slipcase. Previous owner's inscription to front flyleaf. (Beinecke 3446)
