24mo. xvi, 155pp. A valuable survival from the post-Revolutionary, pre-Civil War period in American history, Hitchcock's verses and notes thereto demonstrate the national renegotiation of identity through a fascinating, and distinctly American, blend of literary genre and social and moral principles. Hitchcock's writing is, in one register, a didactic tool for an educated audience able to discern the force of his humor and satire, and in another a critique of the social niceties characterizing that very class of citizens. Bound in quarter calf with marbled paper over boards. Edges generally rubbed, light soiling, tear to front free endpaper, else very good.
